Carnaval in Barranquilla, Colombia resounds with salsa music, rumbas and gaiety. Celebrated like all carnivals in the days just before Lent, the warm summer weather lends itself to brief and exotic costumes and a grand parade with floats and musicians. Carnaval brings together people from all walks of life and ages who celebrate las fiestas de Momo.

The big event in Colombia is the Barranquilla carnival featuring the beautiful Barranquilla women of the coast. It´s held 40 days before each Easter and climaxes with 3 days (Saturday, Sunday and Monday) of parades, parties, music and dancing. The Caribbean rhythm of carnival music will fill the air weeks in advance of the anticipated celebration. The first day draws the biggest crowd and the seats lining the parade route paralleling the Magdalena River will be full. Ticket prices of around $30 for the 3 day carnival will vary depending on location and extras provided. The bleachers will have a netting screen for sun protection with a small band playing prior to the parade and during the intervals. It does not rain this time of year and a seasonal Caribbean breeze makes the event comfortable to watch.

Hundreds of groups and costumes were launched at the hot pavement Cumbiódromo, not so much to impress the jury qualifier, but for letting apparent strengthening of wealth and folk music of this region in the Caribbean Carnival.

CARNIVAL OF BARRANQUILLA

The carnival of Barranquilla is one of the cultural patrimony manifestation that stands out in Colombia because it involves cultural expressions from Colombia Caribbean; That's why in 2001 the National Congress declared it as a National Patrimony and in 2003 the UNESCO declared it as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Humankind and Patrimony.

 

 

 

Barranquilla Carnival takes the city residents and its guests to a 4 days of music and Salsa dancing. On October the city residents picked the carnival's queen, in order to give her enough time to prepare herself for the carnival that takes place in February.

The king, Momo, who is a very important character of the carnival is picked in the beginning of the celebration. During the Saturdays of January (a month earlier) lot of rehearsal of the music, dancing and parades are taking place on the city streets.

La Gran Parada parade starts the carnival on Saturday with lot of spectaculars masks, costumes and music.

The queens with her entourage are dancing in the streets according to the sound of the carnival's drums.
